Pirates! These characters were a ton of fun to design. The challenge is always to try and get out of my comfort zone when it comes to the way draw. I tend to always end up with "la ligne claire". Maybe because that's how we had to draw when I first started in the animation industry? Perhaps also because the bande dessinée authors I love the most drew like that. Color and texture will come at some point.

This week's character design assignment was to draw a crusader. I had a lot of fun researching reference. When I was in high school, I used to read novels that took place in medieval times (Tristan and Isolde anyone?). Forget about hygiene, I just loved the tragic and the sense of honor, perfect antidote to teenage angst. Not all was drama. I laughed re-watching excerpts from "Les Visiteurs" ("The Visitors"), a comedy where a knight and his servant accidentally time travel to the early 1990s. It's ridiculously hilarious.

For a while now I have wanted to draw some of my own characters and also feel comfortable doodling/sketching some of the characters of the shows I am working on. I don't necessarily want them to be completely on model, but at least recognizable...! Until I decided to learn CG, I used to draw all the time. When I did the transition, the time holding a mouse took over the time holding a pencil...sadly. One of my goals is to feel like the pencil can be my partner in crime again for getting ideas out more quickly. This is why I got back into life drawing and why now I started a character design class with Nate Wragg at CGMA. We had to draw monsters for the first assignment. Let me know what you think!

Some poses that seem simple can end up giving you a real headache. I`m not sure if the second pose below reads... Especially all the upper body section starting with the angled torso with her right upper arm foreshortened just over the foreshortened head. Yikes! The last two poses, I included some gesture again this week with the two last poses with both the gesture and the drawing where I took my time more.
